Curbside Solid-Waste Collection Services

Town of Garner residents receive weekly curbside trash service and biweekly recycling service.

The Town also provides yard waste collection of up to one truckload (6 cubic yards) and bulky waste collection of up to 60 pounds per item, if properly prepared and placed next to the curb. Trash and yard waste in excess of one truckload (6 cubic yards), and bulky waste in excess of 60 pounds, are assessed special collection fees.

The Town will not pick up construction debris or any waste generated by commercial or contracted/paid services.

Weekly Curbside Trash

Curbside trash is collected once a week. TRASH means nonperishable solid waste including but not limited to papers, small boxes, rags, cold ashes and other non-recyclable household solid waste or rubbish in small quantities normally generated by occupied premises. Loose trash should be placed in reusable containers no larger than 32 gallons in size or clear plastic bags in loads not heavier than 60 pounds. All trash containers should be placed behind the curb. Also, small quantities of trash can be placed in your roll-out container.

Additional Rollout Request:

For an additional trash or recycle rollout you will need to create a user account and complete a building permit application to request additional trash or recycling bins. (Town of Garner Public Portal). There is a one-time fee of $85 per additional rollout.

Biweekly Curbside Recycling

CURBSIDE RECYCLING COLLECTION is provided to all single-family households every other week, in accordance with the recycling calendar for your route. RECYCLABLES means household recyclable solid waste generated by occupied premises to be stored within the provided containers. One recycling bin is provided per residence, at no charge by the Town. If needed, your regular recycle container (65 gallons) may be switched out a larger (95 gallon) container. An additional container may be purchased for a one-time fee of $85.

Items that are acceptable:

Aluminum, Steel, bi-metal and metal cans
Glass bottles and jars- all colors
Plastic jugs and bottles (i.e. milk, soft drink and juice containers)
Paperboard and cardboard products (i.e. cereal boxes, shoe boxes, gable top, etc.)
Newspapers, magazines, junk mail, catalogs and all inserts
Plastic containers #1, 2 & 5

** Plastic bags are not allowed in the recycle containers

Yard Waste (Weekly Curbside Collection)

Curbside yard waste collection is provided once a week, the same day as your regular garbage day schedule. YARD WASTE means vegetative matter resulting from landscaping maintenance, including but not limited to leaves, grass, twigs, limbs, hedge trimmings, plant trimmings, hay, straw, pine straw, pinecones, and shrubs. Loose yard waste should be placed reusable containers no larger than 32 gallons in size. All yard waste debris should be placed behind the curb. Limbs, hedge clippings, or shrubs less than 1 1/2 inches in diameter should be tied in bundles not exceeding 4 feet in length and 60 pounds in weight or placed in a reusable container. Limbs larger than 1 1/2 inches in diameter need not be tied, but should not exceed 4 foot lengths and 60 pounds per piece, placed with the large ends toward the street. The Town will not pick up any yard waste generated by a commercial or contracted/paid service.

* Due to recent landfill changes, NO BAGS are allowed for yard waste debris.

All-Star Waste is offering yard waste rollout carts (96 gallons, same as the tall green containers for garbage) for sale for $85 apiece. They'll deliver it to you. Order by texting 919.989.1562. Please provide your name, address and, if possible, an email address in the texted request. You can use the cart to put loose yard waste (not bound or in bags) curbside as part of your regular weekly collection.

YARD WASTE MUST BE PROPERLY PREPARED: Improperly prepared curbside trash and yard waste will not be collected as part of the regular service. If this improperly prepared waste accumulates next to the street, it becomes unsafe and unsightly. As a result, the Town will periodically survey the community, tag and remove improperly prepared yard waste, and bill the resident for these collections. The charges for the collection of improperly prepared trash and yard waste are $50 for a small pile (wheelbarrow size load), $100 for a medium pile (pickup truck size load) and $200 for a large pile (small dump truck size load).

Special Unprepared Trash and Yard Waste Collection

In the Spring, the Town will set an "unprepared" trash and yard waste collection schedule. During this time, residents can place unprepared trash and some bulky wastes behind the curb for collection. This collection will not include appliances, hazardous wastes or waste produced by commercial or contractor/paid services. Please do not place unprepared trash and yard waste behind the curb any earlier than one week before the first day of your scheduled collection week. Also, unprepared trash and yard waste must be placed in separate piles.

In the Fall, the Town will set an unprepared yard waste and rimless tire only collection schedule. During this time, residents can put only unprepared yard waste and up to four rimless tires per household behind the curb for collection. No household items will be picked up in the Fall Clean Up or any solid waste generated by commercial or contractor/paid services.

Loose Leaf Collection (Nov.-Feb.)

During "Leaf Season" (November-February), residents can rake loose leaves and pine straw to the edge of the street behind the curb for biweekly collection, away from mailboxes and storm drains. The leaf collection schedule coincides with the week of your regular recycling week schedule (refer to your recycling calendar), unless weather, unusually heavy volume or holidays cause delays. Please be sure that your leaf piles are free of stones, bricks, branches, and other solid objects.

Bulky Waste Collection Services

BULKY WASTE: Solid waste including but not limited to stoves, water heaters, washing machines, dryers, furniture, etc. (excluding freezers, refrigerators, microwaves, treadmills and the like) with weights or volumes greater than those allowed for the roll-out containers. Bulky waste items not exceeding 60 pounds are collected weekly without charge if they are properly prepared and placed next to the curb. Please call or email to schedule a bulky waste items in excess of 60 pounds or volumes greater than can go into the rollout are collected every week, the same day your garbage is collected, and assessed a "Special Collection Fee" of $40.45 per item as described in the following section.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS: This refers to the collection of certain items that are included in the regular service but require an additional charge because of their volume, size, or weight. Special Collections does not refer to the collection of improperly prepared trash or yard waste. Charges for Special Collections are as follows: $40.45 curbside truckload for trash in excess of 6 cubic yards per week, $17.34 per curbside truckload for yard waste in excess of 6 cubic yards per week, $40.45 per item for bulk waste items in excess of 60 pounds or volumes greater than can go into the rollout (Examples: mattresses, box springs, sofas, furniture, large chairs, etc.). Residents will be billed by the Town of Garner for any Special Collections.
