Knox HomeBox™ - Heartland Fire and Rescue - High Security

The Garner Fire-Rescue Department wants our residents to know about the Knox HomeBox. For those that may have limited mobility or are completely immobile, this can be a valuable resource in the event of an emergency.

What is a Knox HomeBox?

It’s a unique keyed box that resembles a small safe. This box is mounted on your home’s exterior near a point of access and contains your house key for ease of access without damaging your property. In the event it needs to be opened, ONLY the Garner Fire Rescue Department personnel have the master key to your HomeBox. This master key is locked on our apparatus and requires a unique numeric combination to remove it. Our staff all have unique numbers so that we can easily identify who removes the master key should a question arise.

The HomeBox is ordered and paid for directly from Knox by the residents with a one-time purchase and no monthly fees. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Captain Don Johnson at djohnson@garnernc.gov.

What are the benefits of a HomeBox?

Seniors and other at-risk (and/or immobile) residents can have peace of mind knowing the fire department can access them quickly if the homeowner is unable to get to the door.
The lock box that contains the key to the residence can only be accessed by the fire department with the unique master key.
The master key to open your HomeBox is unique to Garner Fire-Rescue Department.
The box will only be accessed in times of emergencies.
Significantly less damage to home as opposed to forcing entry through your doors or windows in the event of an emergency.
The HomeBox is easy to install and comes with two mounting options: hanging over the door or affixed to the house.

How does the program work?

Resident purchases box (www.knoxbox.com).
Knox ships the box unlocked and open.
The resident is asked to install the box and call Garner Fire-Rescue at 919-772-1550. If you are unable to install the device, Garner Fire-Rescue will assist you.
The fire department tests the home key and then locks it in the box.
The box comes with a red sticker that is put on the door or window that alerts the fire department that the house has a HomeBox.
