UPDATE: Year-Long Closure of Section of East Garner Road Pushed Back to May 29
NOTE: This is an update to reflect the new closure start date of May 29.
A long-term closure of the East Garner Road bridge over Interstate 40 begins later this month as part of the I-40 widening project in Wake and Johnston counties. The bridge, between Jones Sausage Road and Auburn Church Road, will be shut down for a year on Wednesday, May 29.
Access to businesses and residences on each side of the bridge will remain open up to the work zone.
The closure will allow crews to replace the bridge over the interstate.
The detour going into place will send drivers on the west side of the closure onto Jones Sausage Road, then left on U.S. 70, onto Business 70 as the highway goes under I-40, and left on Auburn-Knightdale Road to get back to East Garner Road. Drivers on the east side of the closure will follow that detour in reverse.
Motorists need to pay extra attention as they approach the closure from either side, and should anticipate taking more time to travel through the area because of the detour.
The I-40 project is adding two lanes in each direction to a nearly 12-mile stretch of the interstate between I-440 on the southeast side of Raleigh and N.C. 42 in Johnston County. It will also improve the interchange at N.C. 42, with a new ramp alignment and traffic pattern.
