Public Works Department Receives Reaccreditation

Congratulations are in order for Garner’s Public Works Department, which recently earned national reaccreditation from the American Public Works Association (APWA). First accredited in the fall of 2014, the department this time around received a 100 percent compliance score during its evaluation.

A team of three APWA evaluators was on site in Garner for two days assessing the department. The new accreditation period lasts for four years.

“I am excited to announce that we have been awarded the renewal of accreditation through APWA,” Public Works Director Forrest Jones said. “It’s truly an honor to be a part of this team. Continued commitment to this accreditation program demonstrates our department’s professionalism and dedication to service.”

The Public Works Department was the first public works agency in the state and only the 95th in North America to be accredited when it first earned the designation in October 2014.

In its letter of reaccreditation to the department, the APWA said, “The perfect 100 compliance score during this most recent evaluation speaks volumes of your continued commitment and culture of excellence you have established within your agency.”

The APWA accreditation program recognizes public works agencies that go beyond the requirements of the management practices established nationally in the public works industry, as contained in the APWA Public Works Management Practices Manual.

According to the APWA website, its accreditation program “is a voluntary, self-motivated approach to objectively evaluate, verify and recognize compliance with the recommended management practices. The objectives of the accreditation program are to:

  • create impetus for organization self-improvement and stimulate general raising of standards;

  • offer a voluntary evaluation and education program rather than government-regulated activity;

  • recognize good performance and provide motivation to maintain and improve performance;

  • improve public works performance and the provision of services;

  • increase professionalism;

  • instill pride among agency staff, elected officials and the local community.”

Garner’s Public Works Department performs a variety of duties and services that enhance the safety, appearance and quality of life around town. Public Works maintains right-of-ways and performs some repairs of Town-maintained streets; removes snow and ice from Town-maintained streets; performs upkeep of Town facilities and parks; manages and maintains the Town’s vehicle fleets; and makes special trash and yard waste collections in the spring, fall and, when necessary, after weather events that generate fallen tree limbs and other debris.
