Garner PD Submission on Officer Recruitment Chosen as Triangle J "Sandbox" Challenge

Post Date:10/05/2018 5:03 PM

The following is a new release from Triangle J Council of Governments:

Elected officials, local government staff and representatives of partner organizations from across the Triangle region selected the Recruitment and Retention of Law Enforcement Professionals--a challenge submitted by the Town of Garner Police Department--as the focus of Triangle J Council of Governments (TJCOG) Regional Innovation #SandboxSeries initiative in 2019. The challenge was chosen by ballot during the closing session of the TJCOG Regional Summit, Economic Growth Knows No Boundaries, in Sanford, N.C. on September 27th.

About the Challenge

Police departments across the region, and beyond, are struggling with unprecedented difficulty to recruit and retain qualified candidates and sworn staff. Most specifically, there is a struggle to attract diverse staff comprised of minorities and females to better reflect the communities the departments serve. Learn more about the challenge and obstacles here

“The issue of law enforcement recruitment and retention is critical for most, if not all, local governments" said Town of Garner Chief of Police Brandon Zuidema. "We feel this is an excellent opportunity for TJCOG and our regional peers to work together to support public safety and safe communities throughout the region.”

In the coming months, TJCOG staff and representatives from the Town of Garner and other member governments will identify the resources and workshops most valuable to local governments facing this challenge that can be offered through The Sandbox. The Sandbox is a new initiative at TJCOG focused on breaking down silos within and between governments, and offering space to test out new ideas and strategies to solve the most complex problems in the Triangle region.

About the #SandboxSeries

Call for Challenges was released earlier this summer to all partners and member governments of TJCOG, asking for submissions of "pressing challenges that individual organizations were struggling to solve on their own... or challenges that were looming on the horizon for the region". Four submissions were chosen for a showcase during the Regional Summit at Hugger Mugger Brewery, giving attendees the opportunity to visit a booth for each challenge, learn about each the topic from the organization who submitted it, and vote for the challenge they felt was most critical for the region to address.
