PRCR Director Makes History with Doctorate

Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Director Sonya Shaw received a doctorate of philosophy in parks, recreation and tourism management from North Carolina State University at the Dec. 15 commencement exercises. She is the first African American female to earn a doctorate degree from the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management Program at North Carolina State University.
 
Dr. Shaw has been with the Town of Garner since 2008. Prior to then, she spent 15 years with the Town of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department and two years with the Goldsboro Parks and Recreation Department.
 
In addition to being department director, Dr. Shaw serves as adjunct faculty at North Carolina Central University and teaches in the Physical Education and Recreation Administration Department. She has also taught in the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management Program at North Carolina State University. During her tenure with the Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department, Dr. Shaw has led the department through national accreditation and numerous recognitions for innovative programs, special events and performing arts.
 
Dr. Shaw's dissertation focused on the career experiences of African American women leaders in parks and recreation, specifically examining the challenges women face in the profession and negotiation strategies women used to gain upward mobility. She previously earned master’s degrees in public administration and agency counseling from North Carolina Central University and a bachelor of arts degree in recreation administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
