Town Issues Alert Concerning Spoofing Scams

Post Date:April 14, 2026 4:13 p.m.

The Town of Garner would like to bring to your attention fraudulent activity involving email and caller ID spoofing. These scams are designed to appear as if they are coming from trusted sources—such as local organizations or governments, financial institutions or even familiar phone numbers—in order to trick individuals into sharing sensitive information or to obtain payments.

What is Spoofing?
Spoofing occurs when a scammer disguises their email address or phone number to make it look legitimate. You may receive an email that appears to come from a trusted sender or a phone call that looks like it’s from a local or known number. The Town of Garner has received reports of both types whereby the scammers have used actual Town email addresses or caller ID information in attempted furtherance of their scam.

What to Watch For:

  • Emails or calls requesting personal or financial information
  • Urgent or threatening language pressuring immediate action
  • Unexpected attachments or links
  • Slight variations in email addresses or unfamiliar phone numbers

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Do not share personal information unless you have verified the source.
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading unknown attachments.
  • Hang up and call back using an official number if something seems off.
  • Report suspicious emails or calls to your service provider or local authorities.

Please remain vigilant and help spread awareness in our community. If you believe you have been targeted or affected by a spoofing attempt that has resulted in financial loss, we encourage you to report it to the police.
