STORM UPDATE: Wednesday Alerts from the Town of Garner

Post Date:09/12/2018 5:23 PM

Here is the Wednesday roundup of storm-related news for Garner residents in order of their posting on our website, starting with the most recent. Stay connected with us by visiting garnernc.gov, following us on Facebook and Twitter and downloading our free "garner info" app at the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

  • Garner Town Hall will be closed all day on Friday. As of this time (Wednesday 5 p.m.), Town Hall is scheduled to open regular hours (8 a.m.-5 p.m.) on Thursday.

  • Triangle transit agencies will suspend bus service starting Thursday afternoon, all day Friday. Details at gotriangle.org/news/breaking-hurricane-florence.

  • Regarding ATMs: As a reminder, if there’s a power outage at or near an ATM, you won’t be able to use that ATM. Please consider now what your financial needs might be for the next few days, since no one can predict whether there will be power outages and, if there are, when power will be restored.

  • Town staff have been in close communication with the National Weather Service in Raleigh. Here are the agency's key messages as of noon on Wednesday:

    1) Even with Florence's track and landfall changes, a prolonged life-threatening rain and subsequent inland flooding event is expected across much of this area.

    2) Dangerous winds will result in widespread downed trees, which will likely culminate in widespread and prolonged power outages.

    3) Residents of central North Carolina should be prepared for an interruption of their daily life activities Thursday night through the weekend (at least). See this previous news post for preparation tips and information.

  • All Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources facilities and parks will be closed Thursday, Sept. 13 through Sunday, Sept. 16 in anticipation of Hurricane Florence. All programs and classes have been cancelled for these days as well. For your safety, we ask that you please refrain from using the parks while they are closed. We will provide post-storm updates regarding usage once damages have been assessed. We appreciate your cooperation and hope everyone stays safe.

  • Carnaval Latino has been rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 30. Location and vendors will remain the same.

  • Regarding Solid Waste Collection: We are still going as scheduled today and tomorrow. Friday is still to be determined depending on the weather.

  • The Garner Magnet High School shelter started receiving evacuees at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
