Original Release from 9/1/2016:
Garner Police are continuing their investigation into a late afternoon fatal accident involving six (6) vehicles. The accident occurred at the intersection of Vandora Springs Road and Timber Drive at around 3:45pm on Thursday. Tyrone Pugh, 56, of Angier was stationary in his 2008 Buick in the left turn lane at that intersection (facing west). He was struck by a 2010 Honda Accord driven by 74 year old John Bergman of Garner. Bergman was traveling south on Vandora Springs Road. During the initial on-scene investigation, officers developed enough evidence to charge Bergman with D.W.I. and running a red light. It is unknown at this point if speed was also a factor. Tyrone Pugh was transported to Wake Med by Wake EMS where he was later pronounced deceased. Others involved in the accident received less serious injuries. Their information will be released once the accident report is complete. Garner Police Department's accident reconstruction team will be reconstructing the accident to determine the exact chain of events that occurred. More information, as well as the initial accident report, should be available tomorrow afternoon. Anyone who witnessed the accident that has not already spoken with police is asked to contact the Garner Police Department at 919-772-8810.
