The Town of Garner has released drafts of its Comprehensive and Transportation Plans for public review and comments through Nov. 4, 2017.
The public is invited to review the draft materials at a drop-in, open-house session at Town Hall (900 7th Ave.) on Monday, Oct. 16 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants will be able to view the plans' maps and drawings, ask questions and submit comments.
The Comprehensive Plan will update the previous Comprehensive Growth Plan 2020 that was adopted in 2006. It will provide a framework for making land development and zoning decisions, promoting orderly land use, implementing public improvements and generating private investment.
The Transportation Plan will be a comprehensive update to the 2010 Garner Transportation Plan. It will examine existing conditions and provide specific strategies and recommendations for all modes of travel including roadways, public transportation, walking and cycling. The plan will be modeled with CAMPO’s Regional Travel Demand data and later submitted to CAMPO (Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization) as an official request to amend the Town’s portion of the CAMPO Comprehensive Transportation Plan.
Both plans will make land use and transportation recommendations through the year 2045, taking into account the growth expected in Garner from the NC 540 outer-loop project.
This exciting planning effort was named Garner Forward and kicked off in May 2016. The Town has contracted with the firm Stantec (Raleigh office) to assist in preparing the plans. The plans have been guided by a working group or steering committee made up of Garner citizens, Town Council and Planning Commission membersand Town staff, which represents a broad cross-section of the Garner community.
A vital component to this process is public involvement, and there have been several public outreach efforts including an on-line “issues survey,” a presentation at the annual Garner Chamber Connect Conference, two workshops, week-long focus group meetings and two open house sessions held at Garner civic group facilities. This year-long collaborative process will result in long-range plans that reflect the desires and values of the people of Garner.
Please visit the project website for the draft materials. Copies of the plans will also be available for review at the Garner Planning Department. The public may make comments directly through the Garner Forward website, in person at the Planning Department, by calling 919.773.4443 or by emailing Project Manager David Bamford at firstname.lastname@example.org.
