Garner Educational Foundation Announces
Cooks for Books

The second annual Cooks for Books fundraiser was a tremendous success. Over 300 attendees sampled items from local food and beverage sponsors, tasted entries from the dessert challenge contest, and voted for their favorite entrée in the Cooks for Books Battle of the Chefs.

The Cooks for Books cooking teams in the Battle of the Chefs were:
WRAL: Ken Smith and Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner with 2011 Champion Cooks for Books chef Elise Johnson. Entrée: Homemade fettuccini with Bolognese sauce and fresh garlic knots and biscotti.
WTVD: Barbara Gibbs with Empire Eats’ chef Darrell Brown from The Pit. Entrée: Seafood Napoleon.
NBC 17: Sharon Delaney and Meteorologist Bill Reh with Eschelon Hospitality’s chef David Baysinger from the Cameron Bar and Grill. Entrée: Shrimp and Grits.

Congratulations to these winners: The Popular Vote entrée winner was Chef David Baysinger from the Cameron Bar and Grill with his Shrimp and Grits and the Judges’ Vote entrée winner was Chef Darrell Brown from The Pit with his Seafood Napoleon. The Grand Prize winner of the Dessert Challenge was Rand Road Elementary School with a Choco Loco Cake baked the Cakerator. Second price went to Garner Chiropractic & Wellness for a carrot cake, third place went to First Presbyterian Church for their oatmeal white chocolate cranberry cookies and the honorable mention went to Rita Saad Hines for her Reese’s Chocolate Peanut Butter dessert.

Thanks to our Cooking Judges Jeffrey Bane of the NC Chefs Academy, Jeff Hatley, Dean of the Culinary School at Wake Tech, and Barry Driver of Capital Chrysler Jeep Dodge and Dessert Challenge Judges Mike McCreery, Mayor Ronnie Williams, and Chuck Killian.
