Garner police officers responded to a citizen's report of suspicious persons and a suspicious vehicle at Oakwater Dr. near Hall Blvd. on 7/1/14 at 12:47 p.m. Garner K-9 Officer, Sonny Roberson spotted the vehicle driving east on Timber Dr. toward Thompson Rd. He attempted to conduct a traffic stop based on the possibility that the individuals in the car had committed a residential breaking and entering on Oakwater Dr. The driver, Howard Lee Covington, turned onto Thompson Rd. and sped his vehicle away in an attempt to evade the traffic stop. After a short vehicle pursuit that ended when the suspect vehicle collided with a ditch embankment, Covington and another occupant ran from the vehicle. Officer Roberson released Bear, his canine partner, who apprehended Covington after a short foot pursuit. Covington received minor injuries and was treated on scene by Wake County EMS personnel. The other two passengers were detained by other officers on scene without further incident.

An investigation of a home on Oakwater Dr. revealed that an unlawful entry had occurred and some electronic devices had been stolen. These items were discovered in the suspect vehicle, stopped by Officer Roberson.

Covington, 21 of Raleigh, NC was charged with Felony Breaking and Entering a residence and several traffic related violations.

Miles Jamel Sanders, 25 of Smithfield and Melvin Eugene Ingram, 29 of Raleigh were also charged with Felony Breaking and Entering a residence.
