2010 Census and the American Community Survey
The U.S. Constitution-mandated census is conducted every 10 years. In 2010
everyone received the “short form” questionnaire. This only included the
following topics: age, gender, Hispanic origin, race, relationship, and
occupancy status. This data is static and will not be updated until 2020.
Other topics for Garner not covered in the 2010 Census relating to social,
economic, and housing characteristics will be released in the American Community
Survey (ACS) which is an ongoing survey that provides data every year. Garner’s
ACS data will be released as 3-Year Estimates.
Three-Year Estimates (Garner)
- Published for selected geographic areas with populations of 20,000 or greater
- Represent the average characteristics over the 3-year period of time
- Have larger sample size than the one-year estimates*
- Are less current than the one-year estimates
* Communities over 65,000 in population also receive 1-Year Estimates
