Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources
Welcome from the Director:
What an exciting summer the Town of Garner has experienced! From hosting the Homecoming Celebration of the 2011 American Idol winner, Scotty McCreery, to the 2011 Pony Girls Softball Opening Ceremonies and Tournament, Garner has experienced a significant increase in tourism this summer.
The nationally televised homecoming celebration for Scotty McCreery, attracted an amazing crowd of 30,000 people, and was estimated to contribute $1.5 million to the local economy. Prior to Scotty becoming the 2011 American Idol winner, weekly viewing parties attracted over 1,200 fans and supporters each week.
Garner also hosted the 2011 Pony League Girls Softball (East Division) Opening Ceremonies and National Tournament games for the Girls 12U/10U Leagues. The week long tournament attracted over 7,000 visitors. The tournament was estimated to contribute $950,000 to Garner’s economy. The event was a huge success due to the Town’s partnership with Garner’s Optimist Club and numerous man-hours of field preparation and outstanding work of the Town’s Public Works Department.
In an effort to embrace our focus on increasing cultural arts programming for our community, the Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department has officially changed its name to the Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department. Garner Performing Arts Center staff has been charged with diversifying performing and cultural arts programming. Several improvements are planned for this fall including a name change to the auditorium, an independent website, a new marquee sign and overall improvements to exterior landscaping. The auditorium will also offer an array of programs for all ages, including shows for school groups.
Such facility improvements, program enhancements and new initiatives would not be possible without the support of our citizens, park neighbors, program participants and visitors. The Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department thanks you for your continued support and looks forward to your participation in new programs offered in the Fall & Winter 2011-2012 brochure as we help you discover…play…celebrate in Garner.
